Shamanic Intensive Training Course:Bolivian Andes & Amazon

Sacha Runa Collective offers two Month-long Shamanic Intensive Training Courses a year
(Jan/Feb and August) in the Bolivian Andes& Amazon (www.sacharuna.com).
The course is indeed Intensive and deeply transformational.
It is intended to help train those people who trully want to entrust themselves to Spirit
and dedicate themselves to Service.
No prerequisite is necessary, except the absolute determination to face oneself
and do what is needed to allow spirit to flow through us and bless creation.
The next one is August1-30.
Have to fly in and out of la Paz, Bolivia.
Application letters are due ASAP.
The next course is Jan/Feb 2009

For serious apprentices who intend to become full fledged shamans and
conduct medicine ceremonies, at least 4 courses are recommended but it
ultimately dependes on everybody's skills.

For a description of the course, please visit www.sacharuna.com
Blessings:
Miguel A. Kavlin

hey travelers,

can anyone personally recommend a hostel (with private rooms) in san francisco?

there seems to be at least a dozen hostels in the area and i'd love some feedback you all have on any you've stayed in.

what matters to me most is cleanliness and surrounding area. i like to be close to the action in the city.

I'm heading to Thailand next week and will be meeting up with friends at some point. Any suggestions on the use of cell phones so I can get in touch with people? Buy one with a calling card? Rent one? Bring my own?

Thanks

I've been to Thailand before and felt like I way overpacked so this time, I'm going to be smart and just bring the bare minimum. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should bring that can't be bought over there? I

'll be going for about 3 weeks over NYE and a side trip to Cambodia.

Thanks,

Tuva Camp 2008

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please check our photos made by Russell Roesner - our student.

How booking direct instead of through the metasearch engines saved me a few bucks!

I just booked a ticket today for the Labor Day weekend -- from Denver to Dallas online for $248! Not bad, IMHO. I first searched on AOL’s metasearch engine www.kayak.com, which searches over 120 airlines at once. I found most prices to be from $270 to $300 based on that. I wasn’t going to search the myriad of sites out there for hours either just to save a few bucks. Time is worth money, too. So I did it as efficiently and effectively as I could, using a couple of big name sites. I had just read an article today that said you can get cheaper flights by booking directly through the airlines, since many of the reservations through the other services charge that extra booking fee. I noted that most of the flights were on Frontier Airlines that I found in Kayak. Then, when I went directly to Frontier Airlines, which flies direct from Dallas to Denver, I was able to find the $248 that I eventually went with - a bargain! I’m satisfied enough with that. In less than 5-10 minutes, I had a ticket confirmed.

A new thing for travelers

Hello from Los Angeles...

I've been hard at work since being run out of Hadrin on a rail three years ago. Well, sometimes. I wrote a book that's now being reviewed by the editing pros (what do you bet they'll think i'm verbose?) and I finally developed the website so many have heard me talk about over the last few years.

What we once called the buyers collective is now online live at www.erinslist.com (yeah, it's named for the head shopper). The idea is simple: the site allows travelers to upload photos of items they find in farflung markets while traveling, making them available to a network of retail clients. If the retailers order an item the traveler can go back into the market and buy it for them. It takes the risk out of shopping, in a way. Take a look if you get a chance.

In addition, each traveler is provided with a blog to share their experiences with both their friends and our retail clients. The blog allow for uploading photos and movies as well as linking to any of the products they've found for sale.

Erinslist is a utility for retail clients, but friends and family are welcome to register and use the site if interested in any of the things we or other travelers find and upload. Even better, if you plan to be traveling please contact me at gary@erinslist.com about using erinslist as a tool. It's free.

Erin and I leave for India, via London, Nov. 16 and will probably be in Asia for most of next year. If you're interested you can keep track of our travels at erinslist.com. Take care of yourselves.

My wife wants to go to a tropical Island/tropical beach for her 40th this year. Can anyone advise.
We have two kids 10 and 7, we like adventure, we are willing to travel, we don't want to spend our time lying on the beach, we need wildlife and we will either go in August or in December for three weeks.

we were thinking Belize, Costa Rica, Indonesia, SE Asia.
Can anyone advise us on a great choice please?

Thanks folks

trekking in Bolivia

I'm trying to plan a trip to Bolivia do some of the world's best trekking from late June until mid-July....those times are not set in stone. As a woman, I'd rather not travel alone to South America. But I don't want to do one of these expensive, over-priced pre-arranged adventure tours either...I'd much rather give money to local trekking guides and the local community. Does anyone have any experience with this area? Anyone interested in going?

I'm a fan of biographies cause they're an interesting way to learn history or be inspired.

I just finished a fantastic book called "Song of Haiti" about an American couple who founded a hospital in Haiti in 1956. It's a great read and I learned a bit about Haiti to boot.

Read anything good lately?

Okay - can anyone break this down for me?
There are so many acronyms - TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, DELTA...

I looked at a posting on ESLCAFE that said the qualifications to teach in Moscow were "CELTA or equivalent" which seems bizarre.

Also, where to get the basic cert in SF Bay Area - and are the rates for this standardized? Are there fast trak options?

thanks,
Aric

****************************************

Dear Friends,

Well Autumn is here to stay and as the leaves turn rapidly I keep praying for an Indian summer. Now is the time for armchair traveling and good thing too because we’ve gotten some excellent travelogues in this month. Margot de Messieres has begun her Fellowship and this month sends us two wonderful stories. Margot is in Sofia, Bulgaria studying woodcarving at the local Bulgarian university.

“I just wanted to let you know that I'm safely in Sofia, with good internet access (cyrillic on the keyboards and Shania Twain on the radio). I am having an AMAZING time! This is absolutely where I most need to be right now. The art academy is working me hard this week... these people are very serious about their craft, and I've seen carvings that just blow me away... Bulgarians must be the kindest people on this earth... things are going really well here.

All the best, and thank you again for helping make this wonderful trip happen.

-Margot de Messieres”

First impressions of Sofia
And yet, I'm falling in love with this city. The people are amazingly, extraordinarily kind to strangers. Even the bank tellers and police have been cheerful and patient with my limited Bulgarian as I try to navigate the bureaucratic obstacle course of registering with the university and settling in. If I get lost, people don't just point the way, they actually walk me to my destination. Despite the hazards, the streets are a wonderful place to be; book shops, vegetable stalls and bazaars crowd the sidewalks and it seems that every little street has a cafe. And Sofia really is pretty. The city is full of shady parks, fountains, and playgrounds. Flowers and grapevines tumble out of the little dirt alleys leading between buildings and beautiful churches nestle in every quarter.

Back to basics in woodcarving school

I've started classes at the Academy of Fine Arts, and I'm learning a tremendous amount about woodcarving. Bulgarians start to study this when they're about thirteen years old. By the time they reach college, they're already incredibly skilled. I, on the other hand, am just beginning, and I'm the source of a lot of gentle amusement for my classmates.

When someone, for whatever reason, has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, she has no right to keep it to herself - Jacques-Ives Cousteau

Fox Glacier- The Good, the Bad, the Cold and the Italians by Michelle Goh (New Zealand)

“Fox Glacier is unusual...” Karri began with the basic facts. And so it was, as I was beginning to discover. This glacier runs down to nearly 200 metres above sea level, existing with adjacent rain forest, formed, according to Maori Legend, by the running and eternal tears of a girl whose lover fell to his death.

The climb first took us through the drainage area, and then steeply into the rainforest, and slight waterfalls, where well-worn steps were visible, hammered into places by steel bands. Cupping our trembling hands and drinking what we could of the water was nevertheless a thrill. As far as I was concerned, there were no outright groans and complaints, for no one wanted to admit that they were unfit for it.

The Swiss couple was mostly silent throughout, the Canadians spoke quietly among themselves, the Singaporeans muttered under their breaths in their own near-indistinguishable lingo, the geologist was understandably loud, mostly in argument with the guides about Glacier formation and the Italians…well…the Italians…

Panorama Junkie waxes lyrical by Nathalie Jordi (China)
It’s raining over Lijian—has been ever since we got here last night—and my sister is still sleeping, so I’ve taken my laptop outside to a wicker chair in the hotel’s small courtyard. Bathing in rust-colored red from the elegantly carved wooden balconies, depicting a wild morass of fantastical cranes and peacocks, and the silk hanging lanterns, I try to decipher the inscriptions in Chinese script winding their gold way from the tops of columns to the bottom. A big, gurgling stone dragon waters a pebble-lined pond, and I’m filled with admiration for this distinct aesthetic style so unfamiliar yet so stately and serene.

On my other side I’m flanked by a big window through which I can see Lijian hurrying about under umbrellas or plastic sheets. A man under a shop awning is hammering out engravings on a bell, so backing the beat of my headphones is the sound of his hammer on the anvil. Old women, bent double but walking assuredly and strong, carry bamboo baskets piled high with lettuce and leek from the mountains, uniting umbrellas with others for a few words before moving on. A man bicycles by with a plastic shopping bag on each handlebar bulbous with loose eggs, narrowly missing a man in a Mao uniform who’s smoking a cigarette and staring at me. There’s a wok on the cobblestones slowly filling with rainwater.
BOOKS OF THE MONTH

This month we begin our newsletter book club. There’s already a permanent page online at www.MyTravelBug.org/Book Club/Index.html

If you’re reading a fascinating or inspiring book with an international ‘flavor’, let us know! Send a brief review to: Editor@mytravelbug.org

Song of Haiti by Barry Paris (reviewed by Amanda O’Neil)
In 1947 William Larimer Mellon Jr., an Arizona cattle rancher in his mid-30s, read a brief article in Life magazine about Albert Schweitzer and his hospital in the jungles of Gabon, Africa. This is the story of how William Larimer Mellon, Jr. and his wife Gwen Grant Mellon founded the H'opital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, Haiti in 1956. A fascinating read in part due to the Mellon family connection and the calm encouragement of Albert Schweitzer to the Mellons. I'm already planning to send it to two friends in the medical profession and at least one friend due for a mid-life crisis.

A Cambodian Odyssey by Haing S. Ngor (reviewed by Serey Sreymom)
Many will find the face of Haing S. Ngor familiar if they have seen a movie called "The Killing Fields". The book starts out with his earliest memories and end with his life in the world of Hollywood. He is good at giving good explanations on the history of Cambodian politics such as the events that lead up to the Khmer Rouge regime, and what life was like during the horrendous four years under Pol Pot because he lived through it.

In Xanadu by William Darymple.
I picked it up while traveling in India and loved it! Darymple chronicled his tracing of Marco Polo's journey through the Middle East and Asia to Xanadu province. He's accurate, historic, and hilarious. A cute book and probably a fast read.

Music, dialogue, images, and subtitles - in multiple-language sound tracks - are designed to stimulate and reinforce learning among users and peer facilitators. Literacy is a means of reducing risk of sexual exploitation, exposure to HIV/AIDS and drug abuse, and forced labour.

I'm heading to the Okanagan, in British Columbia, Canada, soon. Fruitpicking - round Creston or Oliver - is a good way to make a quick buck, and eat some good fruit in the meanitme. Oftentimes, you get a free place to stay.

I know there's an apple pick in the Eastern states and provinces - Vermont, Quebec, Ontario in the fall.

Would the T-Bug be interested. I don't know what the dilly is with fellowships?

Anyone have any other quickbuck suggestions?

Hey All--
I was thinking of teaching English abroad, Prague or possibly London. Any advice on how to do it? I noticed some schools require a teaching certificate, while others just accept your application.
Thanks!

I'll be traveling alone (American, Jewish female) from 8/18-9/7. I'm looking for places to stay & things to do on a budget (any suggestions would be greatly appreciated) as well as travel partners (females preferred). I'm flying into & out of Warsaw w/ a 3.5 hour stop-over in Zurich on my way back to NYC. I'll be spending approx. 1 week each in Warsaw (have a place to stay already), Prague & Budapest. I already have a friend cat/housesitting for those three weeks, but anyone interested in doing a house swap, lemme know. I have very eclectic interests/tastes. I love art & history, relaxing, music, dancing. Please check my page out to see if we might have some things in common.

...and what things would you recommend to a tourist visiting your area?

I hail from midstate Pennsylvania; not the most exciting destination, perhaps, but it has its charms. :) If someone was visiting here, I'd recommend Gettysburg town/battlefield, as well as some of the Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) towns in the local area.

How about you?

Hi!
I'm trying to finish up my fellowship application, and I know the deadline is midnight March 19. Just wondering though -- which time zone are you in? Does it matter? As long as my application comes in by midnight in my time zone is it okay?
Thanks!!
